An Evolution in Bra Fitting: Why We No Longer Use the +4 Measuring Method
Share
At Littlewomen.com, we believe in progressing with the latest advancements in bra technology and science to provide our customers with the best possible fit. That’s why we have moved beyond the outdated +4 measuring method. Developments in fabrics and sizing have allowed us to be able to provide modern bras and bodies with a much more accurate approach.
Why is the +4 method outdated?
For decades, the traditional tape measure technique added four inches to the underbust measurement to determine your band size, but this method is ineffective with modern bra types, styles and fabrics and is often misleading.
Over time, developments in fabric technology have advanced significantly. When this method was created, bras were made from rigid materials with no stretch or movement. However, modern bras use innovative fabrics such as lace, silk, and microfibre that provide flexibility, stretch-ability and increased support. The +4 method was also developed at a time when bras were only available in a narrow size range. Now, sizes extend from AAA to well beyond a J cup, allowing us to provide a more precise and tailored fitting approach.
Another issue with the +4 method is the inaccuracy of the tape measure technique itself. It assumes that a bra worn during measuring fits correctly, which is often not the case. If a bra is already ill-fitting, measurements based on it will be unreliable. In fact, many of our Little Women customers have never worn a bra because they have never found one that fits them or is available in their size. Unreliable measurements do not lead to well-fitting bras. For example, the band of a bra is crucial for support. Adding extra inches unnecessarily results in a loose band, causing the bra to ride up, straps to fall, and an overall lack of proper support.
How have Littlewomen.com advanced?
Recognising these issues, we have embraced a better way of helping our customers find the perfect fit. Our Lingerie Angels are expertly trained and certified in the most effective bra fitting technique - fitting by sight. Through industry-leading training, our Lingerie Angels assess breast shape and body structure to recommend the best fit for your small bust.

Instead of focusing solely on numbers, we prioritise how a bra should feel: comfortable, supportive, and perfectly suited to your body. Whether you need an everyday bra, or something special, our Lingerie Angels are here to help. We understand that some people prefer underwires for support, while others feel most comfortable in wireless designs. If you’re unsure, we will guide you to the best option for your needs.
Bras have existed for centuries, but in recent years, innovations in design and materials have changed the way they should be fitted. The dated +4 measuring method no longer applies, and our fitting by sight method focuses on accuracy, comfort, and real support.
So, why not experience the difference? Book an appointment, get fitted, and meet the small cup bra that’s designed for your bust.
