Dr Antonia Novello's journey began in Puerto Rico, where she was born in 1944. Growing up with a chronic illness, she understood firsthand the importance of access to quality healthcare. This early experience sparked her passion for medicine and public health, leading her to pursue a career as a paediatrician.

In 1990, Dr Novello made history as the first woman to serve as Surgeon General of the United States. During her tenure, she focused on raising awareness of public health issues such as underage drinking, smoking, and AIDS. Her initiatives aimed to improve the health and well-being of all, regardless of background or socioeconomic status

Dr Novello's leadership and advocacy left an indelible mark on the field of medicine. Her groundbreaking work earned her numerous awards and accolades, including the Public Health Service Distinguished Service Medal, the highest honour for civilian service in the United States Public Health Service.
